TECHFIT Digital Surgery: From Soft-Landing Startup to Global Medical Tech Company

TECHFIT Digital Surgery is a powerful example of how innovative companies can launch and scale globally with the right ecosystem, mentorship, and strategic connections. What began at the Volusia Innovation Hub, formerly known as the UCF Business Incubation Program (UCFBIP), has evolved into an international success story in the medical technology industry.

In 2017, TECHFIT, headquartered in Colombia, began exploring opportunities to expand into the U.S. After evaluating major medical technology hubs across the country, including Massachusetts and California, the company chose Volusia County because of its welcoming business environment, collaborative ecosystem, and strong support network for entrepreneurs.

TECHFIT officially launched its U.S. operations through the Soft-Landing Program. Under the leadership and guidance of Hub Manager Connie Garzón, the company developed a strategic growth plan focused on entering the U.S. healthcare and medical device market.

From the beginning, the Hub played a critical role in helping TECHFIT build the connections necessary to accelerate its expansion. Through the resources, mentorship, and business development support provided by the incubator, TECHFIT rapidly established a strong presence in the U.S.

Within only a few months, the company achieved remarkable milestones:

  • Invested more than $1 million in advanced manufacturing and prototyping equipment and placed at ERAU – MicaPlex – Research Park
  • Established a U.S.-based research and operations team
  • Manufactured more than 3,000 implants for international distribution
  • Advanced its first FDA approval process for a proprietary bone reconstruction product
  • Expanded internationally through strategic partnerships including a distribution agreement in Saudi Arabia
  • Hosted academic and medical collaboration events connecting surgeons and researchers from Latin America and Florida

One of the most transformative moments in TECHFIT’s journey came in 2019, when the Hub leveraged its network to connect the company with the prestigious Mayo Clinic Life Sciences Incubator in Jacksonville, Florida. This opportunity significantly accelerated TECHFIT’s growth trajectory and positioned the company within one of the world’s leading healthcare innovation ecosystems.

“At TECHFIT, we deeply appreciate everything Connie Garzón and the Incubator have done for us,” said Mauricio Toro, CEO of TECHFIT. “We sat down, created a strategic plan, and then they orchestrated everything to make it happen, putting us in front of the right people to get us into the Incubator.”

The company continued to grow over the following years, becoming a recognized leader in patient-specific surgical technologies, digital surgical planning, and craniofacial reconstruction solutions.

That growth culminated in a major milestone in 2025 when Acumed acquired key assets from TECHFIT as part of its strategic expansion in the Craniomaxillofacial (CMF) space. The acquisition included TECHFIT’s proprietary digital surgical planning and reconstruction technologies, validating the company’s innovation and global impact within the medical device industry.

As part of the acquisition, Mauricio Toro joined Acumed’s leadership team, bringing his expertise in patient-tailored surgical innovation to a global platform.

TECHFIT’s story demonstrates the power of innovation, international entrepreneurship, and strategic community support. Most importantly, it highlights how the company’s U.S. journey began right here in Volusia County. From a soft-landing startup entering a new market to an internationally recognized medical technology company acquired by a global industry leader, TECHFIT exemplifies the type of high-impact success the Volusia Innovation Hub strives to cultivate every day.
